Finally planning and design work on Jumpgate begins, as Tom and Denis decide that there should be a web portal available to all that wasn't exactly serious (try reading Truely Tabloid for a sample). The goal is to serve the users of Jumpgate. So, if you would like to see something here, let us know, and we'll see what we can do!

The US military Rainbow Project tests faster than light travel in Philadelphia harbor with the USS Eldridge. The ship was teleported 1983. The crew was instructed to turn the field generators off. They did so, and the fields collapsed out of sync. When they returned 4 hours later, 4 crew were dead from being embedded in the hull.
This had nothing really to do with Jumpgates development, but still of interest.

Charles Babbage invented the Difference Engine to compile mathematical tables. He completes it in 1832, and then conceives the idea of a better machine that could perform not just one mathematical task but any kind of calculation. This was the Analytical Engine which was intended as a general symbol manipulator, and had some of the characteristics of today's computers.
Had Babbage completed the Analytical Engine it would have advanced science by almost a century. But, the British Government in thier infinite wisdom suspended funding for his Difference Engine in 1832.
